The United Nations has issued an urgent warning that over 4 million people in eastern Sudan face imminent famine as the humanitarian crisis in the country deepens amid the ongoing civil conflict.
The World Food Programme (WFP) reported that critical aid corridors in the Kassala and Gedaref regions have been effectively blocked for over six weeks, preventing food, medicine, and clean water from reaching besieged populations.
"We are witnessing a catastrophe unfold in real-time," said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain. "Without immediate access, we will lose an entire generation of children to malnutrition and preventable disease."
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has displaced an estimated 12 million people since it began in April 2023, making it the world's largest displacement crisis.
International diplomatic efforts have intensified, with the African Union and European Union calling for an emergency ceasefire to allow humanitarian access. The United States has imposed additional sanctions on RSF commanders accused of blocking aid deliveries.
Medical teams with the International Committee of the Red Cross report treating hundreds of children daily for severe acute malnutrition, with facilities overwhelmed and supplies critically low.
